Ohio River Valley Series
Welcome to Big Springs, Indiana, a small town where everything that is anything is discussed and hashed out at the general store. The store's owners use their business and farm to move slaves on the Underground Railroad. Journey through the trials and heartache that come from helping the slaves gain freedom; first through the Underground Railroad and later on the battlefield. The aftermath of the Civil War brings more struggles. Returning soldiers are haunted by all the death and destruction they have been forced to witness. Some deal with the trauma day by day, leaning on their faith to walk them through the valley. Others choose to drown the images in a bottle, leading to more heartache and depression. The freed slaves face opposition and violence as they attempt to exercise the freedom the new thirteenth amendment guarantees them. They may be free on paper, but not in the eyes of those who once owned them.
